About Our Club – Glima

Also known as Viking Glima or Nordic Wrestling, Glima is a sport rarely practised outside of Scandinavia. It is the hand to hand combat system developed by the Vikings over a thousand years ago and used to devastating effect in battle, to settle disputes and for sport.

As one of the first Glima Academies in the UK, and part of an unbroken line which dates back to Viking-Age Scandinavia, Liam is proud to be a founding member of the UK Glima Federation as well as Hersir of Hird Hafn Southend, part of the Grimfrost Hird.
A Hird was a Viking-Age group of armed companions. The Grimfrost Hird is a global organisation that draws inspiration from the ancient Hird, focusing on reconstructing Viking-Age combat and life through comradery, enthusiasm and fun. Liam is a Hird head instructor for Glima.

The Hird meets both modern requirements and historical expectations where every new recruit can progress in skill, knowledge and rank.

Using ancient traditions from the Viking Age the organization offers a connection to the past, having both value and worth.
